    • Smartphones: 258 smartphones (model M671) – perfect for students to learn mobile application development or practice coding on the go.
    • Windows laptops and mobile phones: 39 ZTE Windows LTE Cat6 devices and 41 KAIOS feature phones – these provide versatile options for various learning purposes.
    • Computer parts and servers: 6 KVM machines and server racks, 31 servers and access points, along with 2 Avaya servers – these can be used to set up computer labs, allowing students to gain practical experience with networking and server management.
    • Communication equipment: 2 transmission cabinets – useful for learning about communication infrastructure and data transmission technologies.

More Than Just Gadgets: Empowering Young Minds

Fundi Bots focuses on providing students with valuable STEM and robotics skills that go beyond traditional classroom learning. Their programs are designed to equip students with practical knowledge and prepare them for future careers in technology fields.

According to Abel Kibiryango, Senior Manager IT Infrastructure at MTN Uganda, this donation will significantly enhance Fundi Bots’ ability to deliver electronics repair, reuse, and robotics programs in primary and secondary schools.

    Aligning with Sustainability Goals

MTN Uganda emphasizes that this initiative goes beyond just a donation. It underscores their commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. By donating electronics nearing the end of their lifespan, MTN Uganda is promoting responsible e-waste management and contributing to a more sustainable future.

Kibiryango highlights that MTN Uganda’s efforts align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically focusing on goals related to good health, clean water, sustainable cities, responsible consumption, and economic growth.

The Challenge of E-waste and a Collaborative Approach

Uganda’s growing reliance on technology has led to a surge in electronic waste (e-waste). With shorter lifespans for devices like smartphones and laptops, e-waste is one of the fastest-growing categories of solid waste globally. This poses a significant challenge for Uganda’s waste management system.

To address this issue, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) conducted a study on managing ICT equipment nearing the end of its useful life. The study recommended incorporating sustainable practices into regulations, establishing permanent collaboration mechanisms, and attracting public-private partnerships for effective e-waste management.

MTN Uganda: A Champion for Sustainability and Education

MTN Uganda’s partnership with Fundi Bots exemplifies their ongoing commitment to environmental and social responsibility. This isn’t the first time they’ve taken action towards sustainability. Their initiatives include:

    • Aligning operations with UN SDGs.
    • Promoting paperless transactions.
    • Integrating solar energy into network sites.

Previously, MTN Uganda donated electronic waste to Makerere University for responsible disposal and potential refurbishment. These efforts demonstrate their dedication to tackling the e-waste challenge while supporting educational institutions.

    Building a Brighter Future, Together

Solomon King Benge, the founder and Executive Director of Fundi Bots, expressed his gratitude for MTN Uganda’s partnership. He emphasized the positive impact this donation will have on STEM education and youth development in Africa.

Looking ahead, both organizations remain committed to working together to equip young minds with the technical skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the future. This collaboration between MTN Uganda and Fundi Bots is a prime example of how responsible business practices and a focus on education can create a more sustainable and empowered future for Uganda and Africa as a whole.
