How to update your Windows 10 to the May 2019 version

Microsoft is making available its latest update to the Windows 10 OS – version 1903. Unlike in the past, where you were required to be in the Insider Program or have an MSDN subscription to download and install an update, the May 2019 version is now open to everyone through Windows Update.

The last thing that Microsoft would want to happen is anything like the problems faced by the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, in which a number of users complained that their files were being deleted from their computers upon installation. The company is now leaving the choice to update up to the user and won’t do any automatic update installations without user consent.

How to install the Windows 10 May 2019 Update

The Windows 10 May 2019 Update is readily available for customers who would like to install the latest release.
We recommend that you back up your system before you start on the installation process. It is good if you upload any essential files to an external drive or cloud storage.

If you are willing to install the update, you have to open your Settings, then go to Update & Security, select Windows Update and then select Check for updates. Once the update appears, you can select Download and install now.

You may actually not see the Download and install now option because Microsoft wants to do away with this in a bid to give you more control over the entire process. Once the download is complete and the update is ready to install, you will be notified for you to choose the appropriate way to finish the installation and reboot.

Microsoft says that the new update will be pushed to Windows 10 version 1803 starting from June, as this version will stop receiving updates this November. Additionally, the corporations using patch management systems can schedule update deployments based on their choice.

Currently Windows 10 is the dominant PC operating system in the world, holding 39.22% market share as of December 2018 compared to Windows 7’s 36.9%.
