USB plugs to evolve by 2014

It’s been decades and we are using the same old USB plug, companies like Apple were pushing their own similar versions of  technologies like the lightening connectors for their latest gadgets. The good news now is that work has commenced for the next evolution of the USB plug but unfortunately there will be no compatibility with existing connectors. This a move that was bound to happen as devices day by day get thinner and lighter and we should set ourselves to embrace the change soon.  The new connector is called Type-C, is an addition to the existing USB 3.1 specification and is expected to be finalized by the middle of 2014.  Speculation is that the new USB connector will be almost the size of the current Micro USB plug and will also be reversible — just like Apple’s lightening connector.

According to the a press release, USB 3.0 Promoter Group chairman Brad Saunders says that

“Type-C will meet evolving design trends in terms of size and usability the Type C will enable an entirely new super-thin class of devices from phones to tablets, to 2-in-1s, to laptops to desktops”
