UCC to revoke non-compliant Pay TV service providers licenses

The Uganda communications commission (UCC) through its regulatory measures is setting a broad trend for 2018. With the SIM replacement exercise finally resumed and switching off Radio stations for promoting witchcraft, it has now come back with a fresh warning to non-compliant Pay TV broadcasters.

According to a public notice published by New Vision, UCC developed new license guidelines but majority of major broadcasters are already up to speed with the updated license terms. However, non-compliant pay TV providers will soon risk having their licenses revoked for illegal broadcasting in accordance with section 27 of the Uganda communications act 2013. Furthermore, UCC shortlisted uncleared service providers including the newest Kwese TV  while others will surprise you as seen below.

    • Multichoice Uganda Limited (DSTV)
    • GOTv Uganda Limited
    • Star DTV Co Ltd (Startimes)
    • Azam Media Uganda Ltd
    • Wananchi Group (Zuku TV)
    • Kwese Support services Ltd (Kwese PayTV)

UCC further stated that with all rights granted to it through Section 5 of the Uganda Communications Act 2013, on 30th April new measures will be enforced to take down and prosecute the non-compliant service providers together with the closure of the broadcasting facilities stated. Having updated Pay TV license terms, UCC’s call checks in as a strict measure that may initially take down any of the named Pay TV providers.
