You can now pay using MTN MoMoPay service at ShopRite outlets

MTN Uganda has partnered with ShopRite stores to allow customers pay for goods using MTN MoMoPay. Instead of carrying bundles of cash to the mall, or even having to worry about getting to change down a big monetary note, one can use their mobile wallet to clear the bill without incurring any extra cost.

While you could have used the service back then, using a USSD code and entering a merchant code into your phone to process a payment, the service has been made a lot more easier here.

At the ShopRite stores, you just have to let the retail cashier know that you will use your MoMoPay wallet to clear for the goods, upon which you will be asked to enter your mobile number into the POS system, after which you will confirm the transaction by entering your PIN on your mobile.

If you are to shop from a merchant elsewhere, you will be required to follow the usual *165*3# procedure to complete the transaction.

    Closer to a cashless economy

The move to a digital and completely cashless economy is getting closer, and MTN has positioned its brand to be at the top spot in delivering this. The MoMoPay service was launched early last year and has since been dispersed across over 75,000 merchants within Kampala, with a further outreach expected beyond the city.

Beyond using the *165*3# code, the company also introduced QR codes in its Scan to Pay feature where a client can use a QR code printed at the merchant business premises to scan using the MyMTN App to checkout and pay bills.

MTN Uganda also partnered with Mastercard and United Bank for Africa (UBA) to inroduce the virtual MoMoCard to allow customers shop or make payments worldwide at any center accepting MasterCard as a payment option, at a cost of UGX 1000 each time the service is used.

The MTN MoMocard works more like a debit card, and is linked to a customer’s Mobile money account. Henceforth all a customer has to do is dial 165*70# and follow the instructions.
