    Uganda’s mobile market competition registered a rise in Q4 2018

    In the latest report released by Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) on the communications sector as of the fourth quarter of 2018, a rise in the mobile and fixed lines subscriptions was registered – something the commission attributes to a more competitive market.

    The report denotes an increase from 23,135,037 subscribers in the third quarter to 24,388,744 at the end of 2018, a 5.4% rise. Similarly the fixed lines users increased from 170,534 to 186,724 about the same time which makes a 9.5%.

    This reflects a growth in organic usage of mobile and fixed line subscriptions in Uganda altogether resulting in a teledensity of 63%.

    Voice Traffic statistics

    UCC connoted the trends in voice traffic in the sector for the 2018 period with on-net voice traffic having the upper hand over off-net traffic. This is precisely because most of the competition in Uganda rotates around on-net offers and who captivates the customers more.

    On-net traffic increased by 17.4% between the first quarter of 2018 and the fourth while off-net traffic slightly increased by 4.4% in the same period.

    SMS Traffic

    There was reduced activity in regards to SMS’s sent between persons (P2P) and those from applications to persons (A2P).

    UCC reports that A2P SMS on net is the most dominant on the market at 89.6% as a result of an increased demand for electronic confirmations for online services conducted. P2P SMS on net follows in with 10%, while P2P SMS off net comes in at 0.4%.

    Compared to the third quarter, A2P SMS on net traffic fell by over 30% while P2P on net dropped by 0.06%. P2P off net on the other hand grew by 0.4% in the same stretch. On the international scene, P2P SMS traffic destined for overseas grew by 3.8% while traffic originating out of the country grew by 13.7%.

    Int he same report, UCC reports that the mobile internet subscription now stands at 14,360,847 up from 13,569,354 reflecting a growth of 5.8%. The total market (this includes both Over the Top OTT and web access) internet penetration now stands at 37%.
