Kiira Motors Corporation(KMC) is not a new name to Ugandans and many people previously had a similar or different opinion regarding the project since it’s launched in 2015. New development reaching us today is that the company has started the construction of their multi-billion factory in Jinja last month.
The project received a juicy endorsement from the government of Uganda with a wholesome contribution of about 147.3UGX billion in seed funding and a 100-acre piece of land. Kiira EVS is the latest car model that hailed from the Makerere University-owned company KMC. The company has thus far launched three tested vehicle concepts including the famous solar-powered Kayoola bus previously set to hit the streets of Uganda this year.
Expectations
The first phase of operations is expected to get done in mid 2021 which will see the construction of startup facilities completed. The facilities include key vehicle test centers, fences, office blocks, power and distributions systems among others.
Electric cars are undeniably the future of motor transports with advanced world economies leading the race for it’s adoption and Uganda’s’ move to set-up the car manufacturing factory plan is one of the few risks that may pay off in the future. The facility when fully operational is expected to produce 150,000 cars annually. The cars that will be made include pickups, compact SUVs, sedans, light and medium duty trucks and buses.
