Microsoft has announced the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, the latest feature update for the OS since April. Windows 10 version 1809 will have a global roll out in the coming weeks and you should expect a notification on your device anytime soon.
To find out if you are ready for the new update, open Settings and click Update & Security. On the Windows Update page and click the Check for Updates button.
Whereas the update comes automatically to you through Windows Update, you can initiate the download yourself.
Before you install the update, we recommend that you back up your system in case something goes wrong in the installation process. It is good if you upload any essential files to an external drive or cloud storage.
You can as well opt for Windows’ built-in backup service, by going to Settings, select Update & Security, and click Backup.
Downloading the update
The best option is to use the Windows 10 Update Assistant. Visit the Microsoft Software download page and click the blue Update Now button. This will download the Windows 10 Update Assistant.
After opening the downloaded file, and accepting it to make changes to your device, click on the Update Now button on the bottom right.
The assistant will perform basic checks on your hardware and start the download process after about 10 seconds. After verifying the download, the assistant will start preparing the update process automatically.
After the update finishes downloading, follow the instructions to restart your PC and complete the installation process. The assistant will automatically restart your computer after a 30-minute countdown. You can click the “Restart now” button in the bottom right to start it immediately or the “Restart later” link in the bottom left to delay it.
Once back on, Windows 10 will go through the final steps to finish installing the update. Edge should open up with a “Welcome to the October update” message.
Since the update comes at no cost, it is only your choice that determines when you can get it. If you find it harder to get it manually, then you ought to wait for a notification via Windows Update.
Among the new supported features announced include an app mirroring feature for Android devices.
