Huawei has taken the route of the likes of Samsung and LG with their respective in-house operating systems that is Tizen and WebOS of running them on their Smart TVs and other connected devices. Huawei’s Hongmeng OS is also said to run its upcoming smart TV lineup according to Yicai Global.
The two respective companies then use Android for their phone divisions and we anticipate Huawei to do the same as tensions cool down between the US and China.
To put this into perspective, there is no clear dominant platform when it comes to connected
TVs even with the likes of Roku having had a clear headstart against competing platforms, it is hard to tell if they command a huge percentage outside the US.
This makes sense for Huawei to join the foray and it will do so using its yet to go live Hongmeng OS with its Honor sub-brand.
Honor known for its beefed yet cost-friendly devices is most likely going to play in the budget category when its smart TV lineup finally debuts.
The smart TV is said to launch in August and will act a hub of control for Huawei’s smart home ambitions as well as an entertainment centre, according to Zhao Ming — Honor’s President.
The TV is said to be of 55 inches and Huawei wants to use the TVs to grab Chinese people’s attention way from phones to big screens. it also wishes to use its experience while striving to make TVs more attractive to its clients.
Hongmeng’s purported compatibility with Android might help to overcome an app drought that would stifle it from taking off, given Android as a platform has wider developer support.
