Huawei Mate 30 Pro to continue rewriting the rules of mobile photography

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro is the Chinese phone maker’s next major flagship, and by all accounts the device aims to be rather revolutionary, breaking new ground with both its edge to edge waterfall screen and cameras.

The latest details come in are the Mate 30 Pro’s new photography prowess which suggests the device may have two 40 megapixel camera sensors with an additional 8-megapixel periscope zoom camera.

Huawei appears to be the company single-handedly pushing the development of smartphone camera performance, at least in the hardware segment. Starting with last year’s P20 Pro, Huawei’s flagships have progressively featured class-leading camera hardware and that trend looks set to continue with the upcoming Mate 30 Pro.

The Mate 30 Pro Camera details

Mate 30 Pro is rumored to feature two 40 MP sensors. The main shooter will be the same game-changing 40 MP RYYB sensor that debuted on the P30 Pro. The ultra-wide-angle camera is the more interesting one, as it’s said to also be a 40 MP 1/1.7″ sensor.

Ultra-wide-angle shooters are generally much worse than the main cameras but, if this rumor turns out to be accurate, the Mate 30 Pro could have an ultra-wide-angle shooter that outperforms the main sensor on most other flagships.

Both shooters are expected to have a new Cine Lens feature for video recording. Huawei phones have received flak for sub-par video recording and we could finally see improvement in that department.

The telephoto lens is expected to be an 8 MP sensor capable of taking 5X optical zoom shoots, just like the P30 Pro. We are not sure if it will also have a Time of Flight (ToF) sensor as well.

How it compares to other cameras

The news appears to be corroborated by above tweet from reliable leaker Ice Universe who posted pictures of the sensors:

The larger sensors are notable because simply increasing resolution without increasing sensor size tends to lead to poor light sensitivity and therefore poorer pictures. The images suggest Huawei is taking the old Nokia Lumia 1020 approach of having a large high-resolution sensor for best picture quality.

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro is clearly intended to be a specs monster, and when it arrives it is expected to be powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 985 chipset with an integrated 5G modem, 55W fast-charging support and 10W wireless reverse charging.
