In May 2017, Google and three other companies signed an agreement to invest in CSquared. Csquared is a broadband infrastructure company focused on building wholesale metro fiber optic internet networks and enabling internet access in Africa.
Many other regions have better broadband internet access compared to Africa. Over 90% of Africans don’t have access to fast broadband. This makes it hard for the region to achieve its human and economic potential.
Africa is in dire need of fast internet connectivity. Fiber optic however, is very expensive to put in place. A single kilometer of fiber optic can cost between $15,000 and $30,000 to lay. Yet, Africa needs at least half a million more kilometers.
Csquared’s model is to deploy and operate infrastructure on a shared foundation. This helps to lower installation and consumer costs. It aims to offer high-quality, inexpensive wholesale services to all licensed operators to unlock a flourishing digital ecosystem.
CSquared is an extension of Project Link
Project Link was Google’s an initiative to build top-notch, high-speed urban fiber networks in Africa’s cities. However, Google folded its Project Link efforts to a new company, CSquared in 2013. CSquared went on to lay 800 km of fiber in Kampala and Entebbe areas.
It also laid down over 840 km of fiber in three Ghanaian cities. By 2017, over 25 ISPs and mobile network operators were using these metro fiber networks to offer broadband services and 4G data to end users. Over 1,200 tower and commercial building sites are connected directly to CSquared’s fiber infrastructure.
Csquared in Uganda
It first launched in Kampala. CSquared’s fiber and WiFi infrastructure help to meet the city’s network demands. In Uganda, the company offers wholesale last-mile WiFi access.
Internet Service Providers and Mobile Network Operators can leverage this network to bring high-quality WiFi to homeowners, small businesses and mobile users on-the-go. In Uganda, Africell, Smile and Roke Telkom use this infrastructure among others.
CSquared builds fiber optic internet to homes to enable future connections by any internet service provider. Internet service providers create products which can be delivered using the existing fiber saving them the trouble to build infrastructure.
Google through CSquared provide the infrastructure so any Internet Service Provider can use it to deliver internet services.
