Airtel Uganda has been going for glory in 2018. The Smartphone Network has reached some huge milestones this year, some of which are unprecedented in Uganda. At the start of the year, Airtel Uganda hit the 10 million subscriber mark coming closer to MTN Uganda which has enjoyed 7 figures for quite sometime. Now with Airtel Internet Everywhere, they have high speed internet everywhere in Uganda!
Airtel Uganda’s exponential growth has been championed by an array of products and services on offer. However, the Managing director of Airtel Uganda, VG Somasekhar owes the growth to commitment to serve.
The Strategy
Airtel Uganda embarked on rolling out 3G sites in all corners of the country to put Airtel Internet Everywhere. In January 2018 while addressing guests at the Kampala Serena Hotel, Airtel Managing Director VG Somasekhar said;
“Airtel’s new network upgrade is part of the company’s vision to empower Uganda with connectivity to high speed internet access. This will drive economic growth and social development in the country”.
However, Airtel expected this new commitment to become a reality in 2-4 month.
Airtel Internet Everywhere
Four months later, the promise has been delivered. Airtel has achieved 100% High Speed Internet Everywhere in Uganda. The Smartphone network now covers all 123 Districts, 4,000kms of Fibre Optic and 4G in all cities in Uganda. The Pearl of Africa is proudly among the first countries in Sub Saharan Africa to achieve this milestone of 100% Mobile Broadband Country wide. Airtel didn’t wait for the government’s proposal to use Satellite for 100% Internet coverage.
VG Somaseshar said that, “With continuous investment we have removed Telecom Infrastructure Gaps in Uganda & improving ease of doing business in Uganda with High Speed Internet Everywhere”.
When we tested Airtel’s 4G experience, we noted that their connection never dropped below 3G. Some people are already hailing the telecom as the new king of the bundles because of its huge-volume-at-a-fair-price-offerings. Forget the data bundle showdowns, what Airtel has accomplished will require some effort for other Telecoms to beat. Consequently, Airtel Uganda is currently cruising in the stratosphere with this milestone.
